The Wait Is Over!

Bedford Esquires was the venue for one of the biggest events of the county’s musical calendar – the MMG Bedfordshire Battle of the Bands Final, on Saturday 17th July.
A wide range of prizes were on offer for the 5 bands competing, each of which had come through two stages of heats on audience votes. Heats took place across the county, in Bedford, Luton, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard. After dramatic victories in the heats, an eclectic bill of some big names drew a big crowd.
Esquires was also packed with both loyal fans and revellers from the River Festival who were keen to keep the live music buzz going all day. The evening did not disappoint with some incendiary performances, including a truly inspiring headline set from rising stars Subset.

1st : Soda Scream (Bedford)
The barrier was rocking as Soda Scream took to the stage to deliver their rough and raunchy electro-rock. Their sensational vocalist Helen growled her way through a set of catchy numbers and the whole band were a pleasure to work with, both on and off-stage. The crowd were absolutely wild for their sound, at points screaming along. We’re predicting big things for these guys!

2nd : See What Happens (MK)
Needing no introduction – literally – the band came onto a blacked-out stage and launched straight into their driven, Brit-rock sound, evoking late Bluetones or mid-period Supergrass whilst stamping their unique identity on the songs. The band are consummate musicians and played a tight and exciting set to a large and appreciative crowd. We can’t wait to see where the band go from here!

3rd : Due To Loss (Dunstable)
Before the band had started their second song the crowd were chanting the band’s name in unison – and this was a sign of things to come for the rest of the night. Taking a large share of the audience vote, Due To Loss and their straight-ahead, punch-packing rock songs got the evening going with a bang. The band played with a lot of heart and their songs deserve huge success. Watch this space!

Who Shot Cupid? (Luton)
Although they didn’t take home a prize, Who Shot Cupid? were on impressive form. With their charismatic singer Daniel and some exceptional guitar work, the band’s melodic rock washed over a spellbound crowd. Their hook-laden songs and intelligent lyrics are earning them a cult following and with performances like this it’s clear to see why.

MisterBrick (Bedford)
Up and coming local boys MisterBrick kicked off proceedings with a very tight set and their unique punk-fuelled sound drew curious listeners into Esquires. With some high-profile shows coming up the band will have an opportunity to reach receptive audiences. SJ
